It dawned on me when Magnolia one of my readers asked if i could send her the contact info for Aunty S (the lady i used to go for sewing lessons) that i had not covered the basics of using a sewing machine!

I know how could i have forgot to cover blog about such an important topic ? i apologise espcially for thoes who want to join Sew IT and have never sewn before.

I would have liked to make the tutorial myself but that will take a couple of days so i am already late i dont want to prolong it any longer.

Plus i found a great site called Craft & Fabric Links

Craft & Fabric Links

This site is great for novice sewist they have covered everything. They even have a free sewing book just for beginners!

Chapter 5 covers setting up the sewing machine i really advise any beginner to take some time and read through that book as it has helped me when i was just starting and i am sure it will help you too.

Here are other sites which i found useful

How to sew using a sewing machine from Wiki How (with pictures)

How to sew using a sewing machine from Instructables

My machine has become my best friend you can read all about my machine here

I hope you found those links helpful ūüôā

Just a reminder that i have moved to Sew Chic and Unique so please visit me there

A couple of months ago i posted Sewing supplies i want and i thought the only way i would get my hands on them is if i ordered them online. That is until Isra from Sew2bhappy and Laila  from Time for tea informed me that there is a shop in Dubai where i could buy them from.

So naturally i had to check them out and boy am i glad i did ūüėÄ

The shop is called Classic Quilts  and it is owned by Marla Ramakrishnan and her husband Shankar Ramakrishnan. Their shop is a sewing haven i could have spent hours there (had it not been for hubby and the girls waiting for me in the car) as they had everything that a sewist would need.

They are i believe the only shop in GCC that i know of that sell quilters sewing supplies. Although its a shop dedicated for quilters however, they sell fabrics imported from the US, all kinds of sewing notions and supplies ( rotary cutters, omingrid ruler, fabric markers,) i mean you name it they have got it.

They also are the dealers for Bernina sewing machines which is like the mercedes of machines lol.

I would have loved to meet Marla but she was out when i arrived so i I met her husband Shankar who was very welcoming and I was given a tour of thier shop.

Their prices were reasonable and i left with a big smile on my face as i had just bought an omnigrid ruler 6 1/2 inch x 24, an olfa rotary cutter 45mm, a fabric marker and a cutting mad 24 x 36 inces ūüėÄ I probably would have bought more things but i needed to save up for IKEA LOL

The good news that they are planning to open up shop in Oman some time next year which is great!  They also have a representative in Oman and you place an order through her (will share the contact info as soon as i get it) at get this the same prices.

Thanks Isra and Laila for letting me know about Classic Quilts ūüėÄ

My Sewing Machine

Sew Mama Sew has declared June the month of Sewing Machines.

I am so excited about this because there is so much i need to learn and i absolutely love Sew Mama Sew. So i decided to participate in their Sewing Machine Meme.

What brand and model do you have?

Janome 6260 QC

 Janome 6260 QC

How long have you had it?

I have had it for 4 months prior to that i had a Janome too JD 1818 whom i used to called Miss JD.

How much does that machine cost (approximately)?

This machine was bought as a gift by my wonderful mother who inspires me everyday to be a better person. It cost 150 RO approx $390 USD it was bought from Salman Stores, Oman. You can read all about it here

What types of things do you sew (i.e. quilting, clothing, handbags, home dec projects, etc.)?

At the moment i sew home decor and handbag accessories. However, i plan on sewing clothes handbags and want to learn how to quilt.

How much do you sew? How much wear and tear does the machine get?

I sew every chance i get lol at least 5 times a week so i am defintely getting my money’s worth.

Do you like/love/hate your machine? Are you ambivalent? Passionate? Does she have a name?

I adore my machine i really loved the fact that it came equipped with the feet (5 different types plus a quilting attachment), the cleaning tools and the machine is designed to store them all, very convnient.

It sews like a dream ( you can control the sewing speed) great for when you sew curves.

I had a name for my previous machine Miss JD but have not found a name for this one yet.

What features does your machine have that work well for you?

I love that i am able to control the speed, it has a feature where it will thread the needle for your (i prefer using my eye though, i just find it quicker), it is loaded with lots of stitches  60 i think. Overall i find it a very user friendly machine and we have a wonderful sewing relationship.

Is there anything that drives you nuts about your machine?

I hate winding bobbins!  I wish they had inlucded an automatic bobbin winder would have made this a perfect machine. But life as we know it is not perfect so cant ask for too much i guess.

Do you have a great story to share about your machine (i.e., Found it under the Christmas tree? Dropped it on the kitchen floor? Sewed your fingernail to your zipper?, Got it from your Great Grandma?, etc.!)? We want to hear it!

NO great story here just that my mother has always been there for me and is always willing to help me out and is happiest when i am happy. She means the world to me and i am very fortunate to have such a mother. She inspires me to be a better person and i believe my creativity, my talents,  my inspirations are all because of her support.

Would you recommend the machine to others? Why?

Yes i would because its user friendly i got the machine when i was still a beginner and i was not too overwhelmed by it. I have attached the User Manual for lots more information.

What factors do you think are important to consider when looking for a new machine?

That it meets your needs, no need to buy a fancy sewing machine when all you want to do is basic sewing. Know what you plan to sew, dont get overwhelmed by the beauty and high tech of it all. If you have money to spare¬†spulrge in on some¬†gorgeous fabric ūüėČ

Do you have a dream machine?

I plan on expanding my collection with an embroidery machine and a serger/overlock machine.

My dream machine would be to sew any of these¬† Husqvarna/Viking, Pfaff or a Bernina sadly¬†none of them are available in Oman ūüė¶

I hope that some of you found this useful and it enabled you to make a choice in choosing the right machine for you

Happy Sewing and remember take it one stitch at a time ūüôā
